It doesn't matter if you had the right of way on the road or the trail: when you hit the pavement, it's going to hurt. As the old sports adage goes, "the best defense is a good offense". In cycling terms, the more visible we are, the more defensive we ride, the more likely we are to avoid be hit or run off a road. So, we need gear that helps us make more obvious to everyone who should know we're on the road:

lights that help us see and be seen,
high visibility clothing,
bells or horns.
and if something happens, a way to communicate and get some help

Your best, most likely option for staying safe on the road is to make sure you can be seen. Maximize your visibility by wearing or accessorizing with gear that has highly reflective accents, bright colours that stand out from their environment and with bold graphics that draw attention to your presence. There is a local trend that appears to be fashion-inspired, of wearing solid black with a small accent stripe or block. With out sections of reflective material, this kind of attire is unlikely to enhance your visibility and safety on the road.
